This case study looks at how Techware helped a 70-user organisation replace ageing on-premises infrastructure, move to the cloud, and lift its security to a defensible baseline across a single site.
The Situation
The organisation was running on ageing on-premises server infrastructure under an incumbent provider that was not meeting service expectations. Staff experienced recurring server access failures and a poor remote working experience, and the environment carried a single point of failure with no viable path to modern security controls. Cyber security maturity was low, with limited identity controls and no formal framework alignment.
What Techware Delivered
The engagement covered a full move to the cloud, an identity overhaul, and an ongoing managed security service:
- Migration of on-premises server workloads to Microsoft 365 and Azure, eliminating the single-server dependency
- Decommissioning of legacy Active Directory and transition to Microsoft Entra ID, enabling conditional access, MFA enforcement and modern device management
- Transition to Techware's managed security service, delivering Essential Eight Maturity Level 1 across all eight strategies with ongoing management and reporting
- 24/7 managed detection and response with active containment
- Established quarterly governance reporting and a technology roadmap cadence
The Outcomes
The migration changed both the risk profile and the day-to-day experience:
- Single point of failure eliminated. Removing the on-premises server took out the organisation's principal availability risk. Service continuity no longer depends on one physical device, and recovery is no longer constrained by hardware replacement lead times.
- Support demand shifted from reactive to planned. After migration and endpoint standardisation, the recurring server access and remote connectivity faults that used to dominate support activity were resolved at their source. Support engagement is now mostly change and improvement work rather than break-fix.
- Essential Eight Maturity Level 1 achieved and maintained. Level 1 was reached across all eight strategies and has been held continuously since, with a further uplift to Maturity Level 2 currently underway.
- Remote access resolved. Staff work from any location on managed devices without VPN dependency, using identity-based conditional access rather than network-perimeter controls.
- Board-level visibility established. A quarterly governance cadence gives the Board a consistent view of current security posture, open risks and forward roadmap, in a format suitable for direct tabling.
The Partnership Today
Since 2022, Techware has managed the environment day to day, with 24/7 detection and response, the Essential Eight posture maintained, and quarterly governance keeping security and roadmap in view. The Maturity Level 2 uplift is in progress.
