If you've found File Explorer to be a bit unresponsive at times… or wondered why it still shows some things with white backgrounds when you're using dark mode… this one's for you.
Microsoft has quietly given File Explorer some small improvements. Which give some polish, that many users have been asking for.
The most obvious one: Dark mode
Up to this point, File Explorer's dark mode has been a bit inconsistent.
When you had it turned on, you'd still get pop-ups, confirmation boxes, and even progress bars still appearing with a bright white background.
It ruined the experience and wasn't a great look.
Well, thankfully that's changing. The new build makes dark mode smoother and more cohesive. It will now apply everywhere, including pop-ups and dialog boxes.
Making things far easier on the eyes.
And there's more…
Microsoft's also making some changes under the hood.
There are some performance improvements with right-click menus and how cloud files are handled by File Explorer. These have been long-term points of frustration for Windows 11 fans. Response times would often be slow when accessing files on OneDrive or SharePoint. With these updates things should be a lot snappier.
And there's a nice additional tweak too
Soon, you'll be able to move the pop-up panels you get when you adjust things like brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktops, to somewhere more suitable on the screen.
They've always appeared on the bottom of the screen, which can get in the way if you wanting to adjust settings while watching a movie with subtitles or playing a game. Now, you can move them out of the way for a cleaner experience.
There is still one long requested change that is yet to be addressed. That's the ability to move the entire taskbar, which was previously possible in Windows 10. But it's a step in the right direction.
These updates show Microsoft is taking meaningful steps to give Windows 11 the polish and refinement users have been asking for.
