Copilot’s getting more handy

Copilot is about to get a lot handier when dealing with your files.

You may have noticed lately that Copilot is popping up a lot more. And it’s set to become even more helpful.

Copilot up to now has mostly worked with things on the web. It helps answer questions, write emails, and summarise documents. It’s very useful… but it’s not exactly a game changer, is it?

Well, things are about to change.

Copilot Actions for local files has just been announced by Microsoft. And this could have a bit impact on how you handle everyday tasks.

How?

Soon you’ll be able to select a group of files, or a folder and tell Copilot what you’d like to do.

  • ‘Delete any duplicate photos.’
  • ‘Rename these invoices by date.’
  • ‘Zip these files and send to Sam.’

Copilot uses your installed apps and tools to do the tasks, leaving you to move onto other things.

You’ll also be able to watch what’s it’s doing step by step and stop it if you wish.

With this update, Copilot can not only give advice but also act on your behalf as a digital assistant.

Microsoft is being cautious with testing and rolling this out slowly.

The feature will roll out to Windows Insiders first (a group that tries new updates early) before it’s deemed ready and released more widely. Once it’s available for all, it could change how we all work day-to-day.

Imagine handing off the tedious tasks like renaming, organising, converting, moving, so you can get on with the work that really matters. And best of all, you retain full control.

Copilot will ask permission before doing anything that will affect your files.

It’s still early days, but it’s becoming clear that your computer will be getting a lot more useful
