Microsoft says this is their new top productivity app

If you use Windows for work every day, what’s the one app you’d struggle to do without?

The latest marketing from Microsoft says the answer should be Copilot.

Microsoft is positioning Copilot as the leading productivity app in Windows 11, putting it ahead of everyday tools like File Explorer, Microsoft To Do and the reliable Snipping Tool.

That’s quite a call.

But it’s no coincidence. There’s a big push around AI PCs now, and Copilot is front and centre of that story.

So, it makes sense that they are putting that forward.

And yes, AI is genuinely helpful.

It’s great to have a tool that can look at a long, winding email threads and pull out the key points for you.

Or something that can help you flesh out half-formed ideas into a structured document.

It can be a real time saver.

But with so many tools we rely on every day, it’s hard to believe it’s become number one.

Most businesses rely on other tools to do the majority of the heavy lifting on a day-to-day basis.

As an example, File Explorer is used constantly. You don’t think about it much, but it’s used to find client documents, move files, organise folders, and keep everything in order.

The same is true of tools like Microsoft To Do and screenshot apps, which help you track tasks and share information quickly.

They’re not flashy. But they are essential for a lot of people throughout their working day.

Copilot is different. It works more like an assistant alongside your existing tools, helping you process information and draft content without replacing the core systems you rely on.

This push probably says more about Microsoft’s AI strategy than how people use these tools day to day.

If Microsoft wants AI to be seen as the future of productivity, placing Copilot at the top makes sense.

For business owners, the better question isn’t “What does Microsoft rank first?” It’s “Where is our team losing time?”

If your team spends a lot of time writing, summarising or planning, Copilot could make a real difference.

On the other hand, if the real problem is disorganised files, or unclear processes, AI won’t resolve that on its own.

AI is becoming part of everyday work, which has plenty of upside potential.

But don’t let the marketing define what productivity should mean for your business.

The best tool is the one that removes your biggest day-to-day frustration.
