Is it just a file?

Is it just a file?

There’s one type of cyber-attack that rarely gets much attention.

And it’s not always easy to spot.

It looks like a normal file 📁

The file we’re talking about is a connection file, and once clicked it appears to open a normal remote session.

But there’s a lot more happening in the background.

That’s where RDP files come in.

RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol. It allows you to connect to another computer over the internet, almost as if you were sitting in front of it.

It’s common for businesses to use it for remote work or to access servers.

The risk comes from how flexible these files can be.

They can be configured to share things from your computer with the remote system, including files, clipboard content, or even login methods.

If you receive a malicious version of one of these files and you open it, you could be giving more access than you intended.

That’s exactly how some attackers are using them.

Microsoft is bringing some new protections in Windows 11 and Windows 10 to deal with this.

Now, when you open one of these connection files, Windows shows a clear warning before anything proceeds ⚠️

It will show where you’re connecting to, whether the file is verified, and what parts of your computer it wants to access.

Better still, those sharing features are turned off by default.

Instead of everything being opened automatically, you choose what gets shared.

This step alone reduces the risk.

You also get an extra warning if the file is from an unknown source. This makes it easier to spot something that doesn't look right.

Phishing emails are becoming more sophisticated, and files like this show how cyber-attacks continue to evolve.

It won’t stop every threat, but it does give you a moment to check before you make a connection.

And sometimes that pause is all it takes to avoid a problem.

🧐 If you received a file asking you to connect to a system, would you feel confident knowing what it’s really doing?
