Shout about your skills on Teams

One of the most common pain points in growing businesses is not technical.

It’s knowing who within the company is best to handle a particular task.

You might have 15, 30, or even 80 people in the business — with talent spread across the board.

But when a specific task arises, a data protection question, Power BI report, or a client onboarding process tweak, it’s not always clear who’s best to handle it.

Microsoft Teams as about to make that easier.

A new feature is coming that will let people list their skills on their Microsoft 365 profile card in Teams.

You’ll be able to click on someone’s name in Teams to see what they’re good at, not just their job title.

So, instead of broad titles, like “Accounts Manager” or “IT Technician” you can see their skills.

Such as:

  • 📍 Contract negotiation
  • 📍 Cyber security audits
  • 📍 Excel automation
  • 📍 Client presentations
  • 📍 HR compliance

It helps managers find the right people for a project, allows colleagues to spot hidden expertise, and gives individuals more control over how they’re seen within the business.

Microsoft is introducing the feature to help with the everyday flow of work.

It will allow colleagues to learn about each other and build more meaningful connections.

This knowledge already exists within the business, but it tends to be buried and not readily available.

This is part of a broader push to make Teams more practical day-to-day and will come to both Windows and Mac.

As businesses grow, informal knowledge sharing starts to break down. In a team of five, everyone knows who does what.

By the time you reach ten, thirty, or fifty people, that clarity often fades.

A lightweight skill directory built into Teams can reduce unnecessary friction. And friction is what slows businesses down.

The key question is whether people will keep their profiles updated. Tools only work if humans use them 😊
